How Is Ukrainian Opinion Changing as the War Grinds On? Discussion of New Data from a Five-Wave Survey

In February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine. Since that time, the world has witnessed tremendous resolve from Ukrainian society in resisting the Kremlin’s armies. But what do Ukrainians think now, as the conflict increasingly resembles a war of attrition? Ukrainian attitudes are key to the war’s future trajectory and any possible peace deal. What kind of war resolution is acceptable? What kind of compromises may be considered to end the bloodshed? Has the inconclusive war eroded support for Ukraine’s leadership and for democracy in Ukraine? How useful are survey results in wartime settings? Panelists will address such questions in light of results from focus groups and a new survey that interviewed many of the same people in Ukraine up to five times at different stages of the war, from December 2021 through June 2024.
