The Petrach Program on Ukraine was established in 1996 as part of the Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (IERES) at the Elliott School of International Affairs. It was initiated with the Petrach Endowment for Ukrainian Studies, aimed at fostering academic research and scholarship focused on Ukraine’s evolving political landscape, societal dynamics, and cultural heritage. The William and Helen Petrach Endowment has been the bedrock resource for IERES’ Program on Ukraine. Today, the Petrach Endowment supports Ukraine-focused scholars and activities, such as our Petrach Ukrainian Studies Fellowship.

The program was conceptualized during a pivotal time in Ukraine’s history, coinciding with its independence and the subsequent transformation of its political and cultural landscape. Over the years, the program has evolved significantly, expanding its focus to encompass a comprehensive examination of contemporary Ukrainian politics, society, and culture.

Recognizing the increasing importance of Ukrainian studies in the context of geopolitical developments, the program has fostered robust research initiatives and academic discourse. It has also collaborated with various institutions to enhance the global understanding of Ukraine’s historical and contemporary challenges. Through events, fellowships, and conferences, the Petrach Program has positioned itself as a key resource for scholars and practitioners interested in the complexities of Ukrainian studies and its broader relevance in international affairs.

In response to the escalating conflict following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the program experienced significant growth. This expansion was marked by the creation of the Elliott School Fund for Scholars Affected by the War in Ukraine, which was launched in Spring 2022. This initiative aims to support Ukrainian scholars and facilitate research opportunities that address contemporary issues facing Ukraine and its role in international relations.

Today, the Petrach Program offers a variety of fellowships and research opportunities, enabling scholars to delve into critical topics related to Ukraine’s politics, society, and culture. It serves as a vital hub for academic inquiry and dialogue surrounding Ukraine’s challenges and contributions on the global stage.
